Project Details

Easy Heat Systems successfully designed and implemented CPVC fire sprinkler systems throughout two seventeen-storey and one nineteen-storey tower blocks in Motherwell, addressing a pressing need to enhance fire safety for residents. Responding to the specific request from North Lanarkshire Council, our design ensured that the system seamlessly covers all communal landings and main hallways, extending into individual flats, comprehensively covering all areas in each building.

The key features of this life-saving installation included:

  • Tyco Blazemaster CPVC Pipework
  • Tyco LF11 Rapid Response Sprinkler Heads
  • Grundfos Fire Safe Automatic Fire Sprinkler Pumps
  • Kohler Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) Systems
  • High Volume GRP Cold Water Storage Tanks

CPVC Blazemaster Pipework

Engineered to withstand very high temperatures, Blazemaster CPVC pipes are integral to the system, meeting the rigorous BS9251 standards, maintaining system integrity and allowing the system to function even under the most demanding fire conditions.

The intricately designed sprinkler system features an extensive network of Blazemaster CPVC pipes, strategically routed through each building via a meticulously planned arrangement of risers and laterals. The comprehensive layout extends coverage to all communal areas and into each individual living space, guaranteeing the availability of water if ever required for fire suppression.

By incorporating materials that not only meet but exceed industry benchmarks, Easy Heat Systems prioritises the longevity, reliability, and efficiency of all every fire sprinkler system we provide.

TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Sprinkler Heads

At the core of an efficient fire protection system is a sprinkler head, designed to quickly extinguish the potential hazard. The Tyco LF11 series used on this project are concealed horizontal sidewall sprinkler heads. These discreet systems utilise a subtle cover plate to conceal the internal mechanisms and incorporate a high-performance fusible link mechanism to ensure dependable functionality if the need ever arises.

In the event of a fire, the cover plate, securely soldered at three points to a retainer ring, disengages upon exposure to elevated temperatures. The solder within the link melts, facilitating the release of the link precisely at the rated temperature threshold. This instantaneous reaction triggers the activation of the sprinkler, facilitating the immediate flow of water to counteract any potential threats posed by the fire.

Extended Water Supply & Back-Up

Meeting the client’s key demand for an extended 45-minute water supply duration was a top priority in the design of this project. A comprehensive solution was implemented, incorporating strategically placed water storage tanks at the base of the tower block, providing a usable water volume of over 16,000 litres. This configuration was complemented by cutting edge Grundfos Firesafe pumps and Kohler Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery systems. The UPS systems were designed to sustain the operation of the entire system for the specified timeframe, ensuring continued functionality even in the event of a total power loss.

Easy Heat Systems led the design phase, collaborating with Kohler to address the scale, battery autonomy, and run time of each UPS system. Two UPS systems were installed per building, a decision that ensures a reliable emergency backup supply in each tower block. This setup guarantees that the automatic fire sprinklers are unaffected by power outages or energy spikes that may occur during a fire outbreak. This commitment to uninterrupted operation significantly enhances the safety of the buildings, marking a key contribution to the overall success of the project.
