With rising energy prices across the country, social housing tenants who are struggling to pay energy bills are turning to alternative heating systems to provide heat for their homes, including gas heaters. Although can initially save them money, it can also have a negative, and sometimes deadly, impact on the tenants and others in the building.
Gas canisters, used as a source of power for gas heaters or camping stoves, can cause fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Although this type of equipment is suitable for use in open air, it can have disastrous consequences when utilised indoors, particularly within multi-tenant housing. Our tenants at ng homes were concerned about this issue, after finding that many of their tenants were bringing gas canisters into their homes, and the security guards were not noticing that this was taking place.
We worked to provide an artificial intelligence-based solution which was specifically calibrated to detect tenants bringing canisters of gas, fuel, or oxygen into the 25-storey tower block. This resulted in the creation and installation of our Chameleon Detect system, which is a fully autonomous detection system that utilises two advanced, wide angled lenses linked to a computer using our Chameleon software – the lenses comprise of a traditional CCTV-style optical lens and one of the world’s most accurate thermal lenses. Together they can autonomously monitor every person who enters a building when motion is sensed, scanning for explosive canisters and instantly alerting the client if one is detected.
If such a monitoring process were to be undertaken through human operation of security staff, this level of 24 hour a day, 365 day a year monitoring would be both expensive and less effective due to human error. Chameleon Detect helps to ensure that those in a duty of care will not fall victim to others bringing prohibited items into the building – identifying the dangers arriving at the door and alerting the responsible persons before it’s too late.

Having identified the prohibited item, the Detect system follows its assigned and customisable response protocol. In this application, Chameleon Detect seamlessly integrates with the door entry system to enable identification of the flat that provided access, or the key fob which was used to gain access, and then notifies the assigned ‘response’ team member of the threat. The ng homes staff member can then follow up on the notification, and ask the tenant to remove the canister from the building before others are put at risk.
For example, if a tenant walks through the door of a tower block carrying a prohibited canister, the Chameleon Detect’s advanced artificial intelligence technology identifies that the item they are carrying is a gas cylinder, with 99.8% certainty. Given the wide-angle lens of the Chameleon Detect, the system is able to observe the entire lobby, including both entrances, whilst remaining stationary. Having identified the prohibited item, the Detect system follows its assigned and customisable response protocol. The concierge can proceed to follow up on this notification, and ask the tenant to remove the canister from the building before other tenants are put at risk.

Our installation of the Chameleon Detect system at Springburn for ng homes has worked to enhance safety for all residents in the building, and has proved highly effective in monitoring the building 24/7. Following the first building’s success, we have installed 28 cameras across 13 different sites, all working to keep tenants safe.
