The Mercedes Benz Vito is the main multi-seat and wheelchair accessible vehicle supplied to commercial taxi companies. However, the model requires some significant conversion to meets Transport For London (TFL) specifications, whilst remaining Euro 6 compliant.
The project required major modification to the body of the vehicle to encompass the upgraded features. Alongside these improvements, the expert team of electrical engineers overhauled the software, developing and re-coding the original set up to create a new system design. In conjunction with the new system, the electronics hardware required upgrading.
Penso’s Trim Shop used the latest technology to develop and renew the taxi’s interior to complete the project. The final phase of the project was to create and design a bespoke vehicle production facility to deploy all the upgrades and improvements. Penso established the sophisticated atelier at their facility in Coventry.
The result of the innovative engineering solutions has enabled the Mercedes Benz Vito Taxi an impressive 25-foot turning circle, crucial when trying to navigate the tight, busy streets of London. This factor alone has seen the vehicle spiral in popularity and over 7,000 taxis have now been produced.
